Al Holbert returned with the same drivers he had in 1985, when electrical problems cost the Lowenbrau porsche 962 of Holbert, Derek Bell, and AL Unser Jr. the victory.

As the green flag flew on a sunny Saturday afternoon the Holbert team held a steady pace up front. Later that evening the Holbert team discovered a Crack in the left-rear brake line and lost 5 laps replacing it, dropping to 15th place. The team then suffered mechanical problems just before dawn, a throttle cable that broke while Unser Jr. was driving. The stop seemingly took the Lowenbrau team out of contention, 22 laps behind.

The Holbert team clawed their way back through the standings after the Busby team and Preston Henn Porsche experience mechanical problems of their own.

The Lowenbrau special would take the lead and win the race at record distance of 2,534.72 miles - 712 laps - and averaging 105.484 mph.

This was the first Daytona 24 hour win for Al Holbert, Derek Bell and Al Unser Jr
