Tom Sneva - aka the Gas Man - had a reputation of being one of the fastest drivers in Indycar racing, but too many second place finishes cost him a ride at Penske racing, despite winning two National Championships with Penske. Sneva was let go after 1978 having finished second at Indy in 77 and 78. Tom got one more second place in 1980 - an amazing charge from 33rd position! For the 1983 season, Sneva was teamed up with legendary Mechanic George Bignotti who had won the 500 six times previously as chief mechanic. Despite indications that Bignotti and Sneva didn't get on all that well, they were a force to be reconed with and the 1983 500 produced an epic battle between Sneva and his former team, Penske racing. It was a day-long battle between Tom and Penske driver Al Unser Sr, who was going for his fourth Indy 500 win. A late race caution saw Unser leading with Sneva on his tail in second. On the restart, Al Unser Jr, who was five laps behind the leaders, jumped the start and passed both Sneva and Unser. Unser Jr. then let his dad pass and spent the next several laps blocking Sneva from getting close to his dad. Sneva finally got by both Unsers with 10 laps to go and went on to a solid 10 second win, crossing the finish line in first place, with his low fuel light on!
