Following the conclusion of the 1996 season in November, two exhibition races were held in Brazil for BPR competitors. Nelson Piquet worked with organizers to hold two extra-championship stages in Brazil, in December.

Curitiba was one of the two chosen, with the stage on the weekend of December 8th and Brasília the following weekend. Each race would last two hours and the participants in each car would be in pairs.

The race was carried out in good weather, Nelson Piquet and the Venezuelan Johnny Cecotto would start in third with McLaren F1

At the start Cecotto overtook the Ferrari to climb into second place. At the end of the first lap, the Venezuelan took the lead of the race. In the pit stops for refueling, changing tires and changing drivers, the Bigazzi team advanced Cecotto's pit stop as much as possible, keeping the Venezuelan on the track, with consecutive fast laps, which allowed him to open up an advantage over the others. Piquet took the McLaren to finish the race. Nelson Piquet took the flag in first place after 88 laps, to the delight of team owner Gabriele Rafanelli.

With an interval of just one week, the BPR circus landed in the federal capital for the second and last extra-championship stage, of the 2 hours from Brasilia In Nelson Piquet's home, it would be no different that the Brazilian, alongside Johnny Ceccoto, achieved a great performance. With the Venezuelan starting the race, the team soon consolidated the lead in the race. Half an hour into the race, Cecotto had an unusual problem in his "stint", when the nut on the front left wheel came loose, detaching the wheel from the hub. The Venezuelan had the skill and calm to take the McLaren to the pits. The damage was reasonable, losing the lead and falling to tenth place. After the damage was addressed, Cecotto was making up the difference lap by lap. He did very well and handed the car over to Nelson Piquet, at the pit stop, leading the race. From then on, he managed to lead the race, taking advantage of McLaren's V12 BMW engine, to receive the flag and take the second victory in Brazil.
