A weakened Sports Prototype field in 1979 allowed Le Means to be dominated by Group 5 and GT class cars - and chief amongst these were the Porsche 935s. The winning car was a Kremer entry in the Group 5 category, in second place was the Dick Barbour/Garretson entry in the IMSA class, driven by Dick Barbour, Rolf Stommelen and actor Paul Newman (and was a class win for the team). The team entered four cars - numbered 70-73. Numbers 70-72 were sponsored by Hawaiian Tropic, whille the number 73 sported Wynn's livery.
