The 1999 Indianapolis 500 was a competitive race. 1990 and 97 winner Arie Luyendyk started on pole and battled with Greg Ray early on. Looking like a solid favorite to get his third win, his day came to end after brushing the wall.

Defending champ Eddie Cheever lead for a bit, but his day ended on lap 140, at which point it looked like a two car duel between Kenny Brack - driving for AJ Foyt, and motorcycle ace Jeff Ward. But there was a wildcard in the race - Robby Gordon who tried to stretch his fuel. Perhaps his team knew that rain was approaching - all he needed was a caution and he would win. But the caution didn't come out and Gordon had to pit for fuel as they were about to take the white flag, handing the lead to Brack with Ward close - but not close enough - behind. Brack sailed to victory - the first Swedish driver to win the 500.

By the time Brack got to victory lane it was raining.

It was car owner AJ Foyt's fifth trip to victory lane at Indy
