Rick Mears set new track records in route to capturing the pole position for the 1986 Indianapolis 500. Despite having such a fast, Penske prepared car, Mears didn't have enough to challenge Kevin Cogan and Bobby Rahal at the end of the race and finished third.

Later in the year at Michigan International Speedway, Mears again won the pole becoming the first driver to qualify at over 220mph at any track (his pole speed was 223mph).

The car was retired after the 1986 season, but called back into duty in May of 1987 when Al Unser Sr. was assigned to the now Cummins liveried car and went on to score his fourth Indy 500 win. This gave the car the unique distinction of winning the Indy 500 pole position one year, and the race the next year.
