Kevin Cogan drove the 1986 Indianapolis 500 like a man possesed, determined to win the race. Running third in the late stages of the race, Cogan passed pole sitter Rick Mears and then leader Bobby Rahal with 14 laps to go and built a solid 3 second lead. Rahal was running low on fuel and couldn't pursue Cogan. But on lap 194 Arie Luyendy spun and brought out the yellow flag. This allowed Rahal to conserve enough fuel to mount an attack on Cogan on the restart with two laps to go and win the race. Cogan held off Mears for second.
