For the first time since 1972, Gordon Johncock showed up at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in a car that was not dayglo red. New sponsor North American Van Lines brought a new livery to the Patrick Racing Team. But by 1978 the four-cylinder DGS engine (turbo Offy) that powered the car was on it's last legs. Gordy managed to qualify 6th, and finished a solid third, one lap down, but the race was dominated and won by eight-cylinder Cosworth powered cars.
