The 2014 Indianapolis 500 had one of the greatest finishes in the 98 runnings of the 500. It was also one of the best showings for American drivers in many years as the race was dominated by American drivers such as Ryan Hunter-Reay, Marco Andretti, and pole sitter Ed Carpenter, as well as ever popular Brazilian Helio Castroneves who was going for his record tying fourth victory. The race set a record itself by having the first 149 laps of 200 run caution-free. But the saying is, cautions-breed-cautions and a race that was shattering the record average by 22 miles per hour would fall short of a new 500 mile record by less than 1mph due to a caution-riddled final 50 laps. The final caution came out with less than 10 laps to go which prompted race control to red-flag the race in the hopes of finishing the race under green. This set up a classic battle between Hunter-Reay and Castroneves with the two drivers swapping the lead numerous times in the closing laps and Ryan Hunter-Reay beating Castroneves to the line in the second closest finish in 500 history, giving team owner Michael Andretti his third 500 win as a car owner.
