1970 was a very trying year for Mclaren. Bruce McLaren had won the 1969 Can Am Championship and was competing in the 1970 F1 season with plans to compete in Can Am as well. The Monaco GP on May 10 would be McLaren's last race as he was killed testing the M8D Can Am car on June 2nd, less than two weeks before the start of the Can Am season and days before the next F1 race in Belgium.

Dan Gurney scored his final F1 points in France before permanently retiring after the British Grand Prix.

In F1 Denny Hulme managed a 3rd place finish at the German Grand Prix after starting 16th.

Hulme also went on to easily win the 1970 Can Am Championship in the M8D, winning 5 of the 9 races. Dan Gurney won the first two races, and Peter Gethin won one, giving McLaren 8 victories in 9 races.
