Always an innovator, Lotus' Colin Chapman was again thinking one step ahead of the competition when he designed the Lotus 49 powered by the new Cosworth engine - one of the most enduring engines in all of motorsports, variations of which have competed into the 2000s. Jim Clark won with the car in it's first outing at the 1967 Netherlands Grand Prix, plus three more races that year, finishing second in the 1967 World Championship to Denny Hulme. Clark would win one more time in the Lotus 49 in the opening round of the 1968 Championship before his tragic death in April of that year.
