During the late 60s and 1970s, it was common to see on-off entries in the South African Round of the Formula One World Championship. These cars were typically sponsored by tobacco companies with ties to South African, driven by drivers who would compete in the South African F1 championship. From 1972-1974 South African driver Eddie Keizan competed in the South African Grand Prix at Kyalam. In 1973 Keizan started 22nd on the grid and completed 67 of the 79 laps and was credited with a non-classified finished in 13th.
