By 1983 A.J. Foyt was no longer attempting to build his own cars and was committed to running the March 83C Chassis with Valvoline sponsorship.

It was a stressful year for A.J. as his father passed away just weeks before the 500. Foyt qualified 24th and dropped out of the race after 24 laps finishing in 31st position.
