only check Indycals

1977 was a historic year at Indianapolis for several reasons. Tom Sneva became the first driver to turn a lap at 200mph. Janet Guthrie became the first woman to qualify for the 500, and of course A. J. Foyt, became the first four time winner.

1973 Indianapolis 500 winner Gordon Johncock dominated the race, despite battling with fatigue from the high temperatures during the race. Johncock made his final pitstop with 17 laps to go and came out with a big lead on AJ Foyt and it looked like Johncock would cruise to victory... but on his out-lap his engine gave out just before the start finish line. Gordy pulled the car off the track in turn one and promptly got out of the car and cooled himself off in the creek that runs through the turn one infield.
