1977 was a historic year at Indianapolis for several reasons. Tom Sneva became the first driver to turn a lap at 200mph. Janet Guthrie became the first woman to qualify for the 500, and of course A. J. Foyt, became the first four time winner.
Janet qualified 26th, but her race was plagued by mechnical woes and was only able to complete 27 laps, finishing 29th.
The following year she would again qualify for the race, complete 190 laps, and finish 9th... while driving with a wrist that was fractured two days earlier.
