The early 1970s saw the McLaren team rise to prominence in both Formula One and Indy car racing, after dominating CAN-AM racing in the late 60s. McLarens were the teams to beat at Indianapolis in 1971 and 72. McLaren driver Peter Revson snatched the pole from Penske rival Mark Donohue in 1971, however it was Donohue who lead easily early in the race before being sidelined by mechanical failure. Donohue went on to finish second.

Revson and Donohue again started on the front row in 1972 - beaten out for the pole by Bobby Unser, but it was Donohues team mate Gary Bettenhausen that dominated the race before mechanical woes handed the win over to team mate Donohue. McLaren driver's Revson and Johncock both had short days with Revson finishing 31st and Johncock 20th.
