The 50th running of the Indianapolis 500 in 1966 was memorable, but not necessarily for the right reasons. A massive crash at the start took out eleven of the thirty-three starters before they made it to turn one. Pole sitter Mario Andretti lead early but dropped out after 27 laps. In fact, by 100 miles (40 laps) there were only 15 cars running! Only seven cars would be running at the finish. Jackie Stewart dominated the last 50 laps until retiring with less than ten laps to go, handing the lead to team mate Graham Hill. There was some controversy though, as the Granatelli Team Lotus entry of Jim Clark went to victory circle thinking they had won, only to find Graham Hill already there!
