The 1966 Indianapolis 500 was one of the most chaotic and confusing on record. Eleven of the thirty-three cars were eliminated in a first lap accident right at the start of the race.

After competing in Lotus powere cars for the previous three years, Dan Gurney had come to Indy with cars of his own construction in 1966. Five of his Eagles made the race, but it was a short day for Dan, who was one of the eleven cars eliminated in that first lap crash.
