The 1966 Indianapolis 500 was one of the most chaotic and confusing on record. Eleven of the thirty-three cars were eliminated in a first lap accident right at the start of the race. Jim Clark looked like he would cruise to an easy repeat win, but two spins during the race hampered that possibility. Lloyd Ruby pretty much controlled the race, leading 78 of the first 150 laps, only to have the car break down while comfortably leading the race. Rookie Jackie stwart lead the next 40 laps before dopping out and moving Graham Hill to the lead and eventual win.
