only check Indycals

In the late 1930s, Wilbur Shaw was the dominant force at Indianapolis. He won the race in 1937, finished second in 1938, and won again in 1939 and 40. It looked like Louis Meyer would become a four-time winner in 1939, but Shaw caught and passed him with 17 laps to go. Meyer continued to chase Shaw, but shredded a tire which put him a lap down. With three laps to go Meyer crashed into the inner railing on the back strech - he flew out of the car, landed on the track, got up ran to safety, and promptly retired from the sport as Shaw cruised to his second victory.
