2005 looked to be a promising year at Indy for Buddy Lazier. Driving for the Byrd Brothers under the Panther Racing banner, Buddy was looking like a real contender... until Carb Day. Before getting any hot laps in on Carb Day, something broke on Buddy's car and sent him into the wall. The Panther crew was able to effect repairs, but Buddy would start the race in an untested car.

On race day Buddy looked like a man possesed. Running with the leaders all day, usually in the top five, he clearly had a car that was hard to beat.

On lap 155 the car sustained nose damage that necessitated a new nose.

On lap 160 the new nose was damaged and the left front wing bent upwards when rookie Danica Patrick spun and took out both of Buddy's team mates.

Twenty laps later Scott Sharp put a chop block on buddy that tore open the right front wing. Finally with just a couple laps to go, rookie Sebastien Bourdais crashed and Buddy's left front wing was damaged. Despite this, Buddy held on for a solid 5th place finish in what was a most competitive 500.
