The 1986 World Championship was one of the most exciting in Formula One History. It came down to the final race of the year in Australia and three drivers had the chance to win the Championship, with Nigel Mansell 'in the driver's seat' so to speak. All he had to do was to finish third to win the championship. Team mate Nelson Piquet and Alain Prost were the ohter two drivers in contention. As the race drew to a close, Prost's team mate Keke Rosberg was leading, followed by Piquet and Mansell. Rosberg had a tire failure that handed lead to Piquet with Mansell on his way to an easy championship in second... until Mansell had a rear tire explode taking him out of the race. The Championship now looked to belong to Piquet, but after two late-race tire failures, the Williams team exercised caution and brought Piquet in for a tire change. Piquet came out of the pits 15 seconds behind prost, and closed it down to 4 seconds, but it was not enough and Alain Prost scored his second consecutive Championship.
