By 1989 the Porsche 962 was showing it's age in World Sports Prototype racing, and competition was fierce from the likes of Sauber Mercedes and defenindg Sports Prototype Champions Jaguar. Nevertheless, Joest racing managed to score a win in Dijon and two second place finishes to secure second overall to the dominant Sauber Mercedes team and finishing two positions ahead of defending champions Jaguar.
